Junyo ex-Kashiwara Maru
Launched 26 June, 1941; completed 5 May, 1942; torpedoed and damaged off Nagasaki 
9 December, 1944 by US submarines Redfish and Sea Devil; not returned to service, 
broken up at Sasebo, 1947.

General Notes:
Formerly Kashiwara Maru and Izumo Maru laid down in 1939 as 27500 GR, 24-knot 
liners for the NYK Line.  Taken over by he Imperial Japanese Navy in August 1940 and 
completed as aircraft carriers.  The fitting of new pattern boilers was intended to raise the
maximum speed by 1.5 knots, but in service, the ships seldom achived more than 22-23 
knots.    The combined island and funnel was the first of it's type in the Japanese Navy
Flight deck: 690ft x 89 1/2 ft.

From 1943: 40 x 25mm AA; from July 1944 Junyo: 76 x 25mm, 6 x 28 AA rocket-
Launchers.
